Most school children sing a variation of this version, as the word "girt" is not commonly used these day (except by Shakespeare and National Anthems) and "dirt" is much more logical to a child mind. My brother believe these were the proper words for years. This general belief was even discussed in the newspapers before the Sydney 2000 Olympics ("Should 'girt' be changed?" "will the rest of the world laugh at our 'Girt'" etc
