There's a whole synergy behind this. Besides the whole age-six plus fuzzy transistor radio thing, there was a Terri Gibbs song around that time called "Somebody's Knockin'" that went:
Somebody's knockin', should I let him in?
Lord, it's the Devil--will you look at him?
I'd heard about him, but I'd never dreamed
He'd have blue eyes and blue jeans!
So when I heard Neil Diamond, I just assumed that he was, well, the Devil in blue jeans, babe!
