Initial reaction (about age 7) was "gee, what a nice guy - she's vomiting all over the place and he still loves her!" As I got older I just knew it couldn't be right, but never had the nerve to ask anyone. One night when I was a bit drunk, and in my mid-twenties, I rather shamefacedly asked a friend what the real lyrics were. I then told her what I had misheard, and she's never let me forget it!
