There's been a jingle on the radio for as long as I can remember advertising a store called Rockaway Bedding. And although I knew there was no way U2 would reference a New Jersey mattress store in one of their songs, I guess the name stuck in my head.
I thought it was just a random phrase, until my mom asked me one day what U2's first popular song was. I said, "I Will Follow," and she didn't recognize the name, so I started singing the chorus. But I kind of mumbled 'Rockaway,' because for the first time, I had this feeling that those weren't the right lyrics.
A few days later I heard the live version from Under A Blood Red Sky, which was much clearer. I suddenly realized the chorus had a meaning!!! And felt like an idiot.
