I was raised on oldies radio, so I heard this song a lot. I always thought he was singing about my then-best friend's dad (who was named Gordon). I had thought that to be extremely weird, since I had not yet heard of the concept of homosexuality (believe me, I HAVE now!), and I didn't learnt he right lyrics until I heard my dad singing along to it.
