The story:

when I actually READ the lyrics after I'd done an elaborate analysis in class, claiming that the song dealt with the emotional trauma experienced by the child of a great author.

That it was ACTUALLY about the mysterous child Caspar Hauser, who had lived all his life in a cell and was thougt to be the rejected son of the royal family, had eluded my attention.
Eventually nobody noticed - Suzanne Vega wasn't a big hit with my classmates nor my teacher for that matter - but I sure felt DUMB.
