Drunken Karaoke in the ROK
I was born and raised in Alabama. I have belted out my version of the song more times than I can remember. Not one person ever corrected me. Maybe they thought that I was correct? In 2007 at a Karaoke bar in Seoul Korea, while visiting my husband who was stationed there, I got called out by a 23 year old KATUSA who worked for my husband. "What did you sing? The part about what they love in Birmingham ...", he asked. Over the loud din of the crowd and careful to enunciate I replied. "Oh, Sorry, I guess I'm a little drunk. I said, 'In Birmingham WE love BEGONIAS'" "Like the flower?" he asked. "Yeah," I said. "I'm impressed." He beamed a bright smile and nodded as we clanked our beer bottles in toast.
The next week my husband told me that "Ben" had given him something for me. It was a print out of the lyrics. Not exactly "called out" as we do it in Alabama but for a respectful Korean kid, quite gutsy.
