I genuinely accepted these as the correct lyrics, assuming that they were part of the general mea culpa tone of the song. Fortunately for me the moment of revelation was when a cousin of mine, who assumed the same lyrical content as I did, sang it out loud at a large family gathering. He and I were the only two not laughing, but at least I wasn't the focus.
