Because of Cat Stevens' dodgy elocution and idiosyncratic warbling, I spent my entire childhood thinking that Stevens was telling me to "be strange." It took Natalie Merchant's overly precise phrasing to set me straight, and by that time, I was I was old enough to drink and vote.
