The story:
Don't have a good revelation story (just read the lyrics one day and saw the correct version), but I'll tell you why I think my misheard version is better: Burlington Coat Factory! Their retail clothes go on sale when the fall comes, don't they? It always made sense to ME ... I mean, it was a weird lyric, admittedly, but I found it plausible enough that I somehow convinced myself it was correct ...
