I was about ten years old when I heard this song for the first time and came up with those lyrics. I figured the bursting line was the point where you can't take it any more and then you're 'on the outs' with whoever pushed you over the bursting line. Because you're on the outs with that person that makes you free to find someone else to take a chance on you. It all made sense when I was ten years old and I never realized what the real lyrics were until my youngest daughter was six and she made me listen to her A-Teens CD.
