The story:
I was actually really fond of this lyric, and I thought it was very clever of Mr. Springsteen. When trying to learn the other words, I went to various lyrics websites, annoyed that they all had this line wrong. Finally, I went back and listened to the song closely, and it does, as a matter of fact, say "manager's," not "mannequin." Oh well, I like mine better. :)
