The story:

I never even considered that my "version" of this song was wrong. I thought it was typical Bowie wordplay, combining the idea of workers striking with maybe a doctor striking a vein during surgery or something. And not-so-good cars are called lemons, so I figured the "worker's strike" resulted in poorly made cars. I swear, it made sense in my head.
It wasn't until I heard a live version many years later that I realized how wrong I'd been.
