THE MISHEARD:

You ate my family!

The story:

This is a song I wrote, so it never occurred to me that the lyric would be misheard. In fact, I played it for years in coffeehouses, and nobody ever told me they heard anything unusual.

Maybe they were just being polite?

Years later, while singing it for the first time in a recording studio, the sound engineer was courteous enough to impolitely tell me that "you ain't my family" sounded like "you ate my family".

I'm not embarrassed by it. In fact, I'm thinking about selling T-Shirts on my website with the phrase "You Ate My Family".
