The story:
I heard this song on the radio as a kid when it first came out. At the time I didn't know what the song was called who who sang it, but I interpreted it as a first person narrative of an Indian brave going on a vision quest. It wan't until I reached my adult years and I was trying to look up the lyrics to this song on the Internet that I realized it wasn't about an Indian at all

That is the most thoughtful interpretation of this song anyone could ever muster. I'm surprised the members of America didn't even recognize their own cultural heritage when they wrote this lost classic.
