The story:

Originally, the lyrics I thought were correct were
pretty close. But my little brother CONVINCED me
that I was wrong, and these were right. After all, the
song is called "Scar Tissue", so it makes sense for it
to be about "burns I shed". Seemed logical.

Unfortunately, at a later date I was singing along in
a car LOUDLY with a bunch of friends, who all
promptly turned and stared at me for a long period
of time afterwards.
