It came on the radio one day I started singing it at the top of my voice. My mother helpfully pointed out that it was 'da be da ba die' and proceeded to chuckle warmly at my expense. All I could think was that my version made a lot more sense. Luckily I'm not the only one who thought it was 'if i was green i would die.' I told some of my friends about it and they said they had thought that was the real lyric too.
