The story:
My mother played violin in the orchestra which accompanied this each Xmas in our hometown, so I heard it from early childhood. I think I was already in my late teens when I realised that, biblical fondness for shepherds and sheep notwithstanding, I had probably got that wrong and looked them up one year.
