My mother is famous for her misunderstanding of
lyrics, putting wrong lyrics with the wrong
melody, and singing la la la. . . when she doesn't
know the words. Our immediate family had learned
to just ignore her mistakes because she likes to
sing so much, but when my husband joined the
family, he started challenging her. The
interchange about this one was particularly funny.
He said, "Carol, sing that song again." She did.
He said, "I don't think those are the words." She
said, "They are too the words." He said, "Now
sing it again." She did. He asked her, "Could
those possibly be the right words? Do they make
sense?" She agreed that they did not make sense,
but she still insisted that they were the correct
words. She still believes they are.
