The story:
I had an image in my head of someone on top of a flag pole. One day, while watching this with my mom and sister, I asked my mother if that was a saying anybody had ever really used. She looked at me like I was stupid, and started explaining what polls are. My sister then broke in with "you were thinking p-o-l-e weren't you?" when I nodded, my mother said that only made it worse.
