The story:
I heard this song in the car on the way home. I have always wondered why Jimi would want me to "dig my Irv". Who's Irv and why should I dig him? But I just figured that it was one of those things that I wouldn't understand. I also thought the lyrics could be "dig my herb", which could be a reference to pot. That seemed more plausible given when the song what written and who performed it. I looked up the lyrics tonight to find out and I was completely wrong on both counts.
