The story:
After having thought it was the misheard lyric for well over a year I made the simplee comment, whilst listening to the album with a friend, "Do you think gerbils do actually cry?"
Said friend was obviously a little confused at this question and asked me why I'd asked such a random question to which I replied because of the lyrics in this song.
After she'd stopped laughing she asked "Didn't you ever wonder why the song is called Jailbird?".
She had a fair point.
