Unfortunately, the error and realization occured at the same time: I had driven up to the ATM with a Motown CD playing. Listening to the Temps as I filled out the envelope, I had to stop abruptly, "Wait, wait, what did he just say? Boy, they were poorer than I thought!" I backed up the CD a bit and heard the correct lyric. It's a fun story to tell when misheard lyrics is the topic of conversation.
