The story:
The guy I was dating when that song first came out was Italian, so I thought that it was just an interesting coincidence. As I was (and still am) prone to breaking out in full voiced song, he heard me sing it often. He thought I was merely flattering him by singing about him. Quite some time later, a friend heard my version & corrected me. It was so funny, especially after I told her the story of why I never knew I was wrong. It must have worked though because my Dago & I are getting married Feb 98--eleven years later. We still laugh about those lyrics & plan to play that song at our reception.
