THE MISHEARD:

Virgil Caine is my name, and I drove an abandoned train,
Til so much cavalry came and tore up the tracks again,
In the winter of '65, where the hungry jew was barely alive,
I caught a train to Richmond LaFelle, it was a time I remember oh so wel

Real Lyric Virgil Caine is the name, and I served on the Danville train,
Til Stoneman's cavalry came and tore up the tracks again,
In the winter of '65, we were hungry, just barely alive,
By May the Tenth, Richmond had fell, it was a time I remember oh so well,

The story:

I am Scottish, have always loved this song.

My fiance is from Arkansas and the first time he heard me singing this he thought it was hilarious!! He told me what the real lyrics were.

I said I thought they'd just added in a bit about WWII with the "hungry jew" lyric, and I thought Richmond LaFelle was a place in the USA.

Oh the shame!
