Never realized the passing hours, evening showers,
The good news hangin' in my darkest dreams
And the sun fired hard (or "on") the social scene
Dressed up on a lady dawn the nitty green

    Artist: Elton John
Real Lyric: ...Altar-bound, hypnotized,...Never realised the passing hours of evening showersSlip noose hanging in my darkest dreamsI'm strangled by your haunted social sceneJust a pawn out-played by a dominating Queen...Saved in time, thank God my music's still alive...And I would have walked head on into the deep end of the riverClinging to your stocks and bondsPaying your H.P. demands foreverComing in the morning with a truck to take me home...So save your strength and run the field you play alone...

    The story:

This song was one big mystery to my 13 or 14 year
old mind. I had no idea what it was about,
although it was intriguing with its people rolling
'round the basement floor and whatnot.

I owned only the 45 RPM recording, so I didn't
have the actual wording at hand, nor any easy way
to find it out. Thus, while I knew that "So say
you're string (etc.)" was probably not what Elton
was really so adamantly insisting upon, off-kilter
phrases like that one and the mental images they
evoked came to be considered by me just as
integral a part of the song as the parts I got
    right did.

Bottom line? Someone Saved My Life Tonight exists
for me--even today, although I now know the
correct lyrics--in that same category of surreal
songwriting as (for example) Come Together and
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.
